A split system is only as good as its install. Undersize it and it runs flat out and never quite gets there. Oversize it and it short cycles, leaving the room cold and damp. We size to the room, because glazing, orientation, insulation and ceiling height all count.
The electrical side matters just as much. Air conditioners need their own circuit with correctly rated protection. Run one off a general power circuit and you'll be resetting the breaker every hot afternoon.

As a rough guide, about 0.15kW per square metre for a well insulated room. Glazing, west facing walls and high ceilings change that a lot, so we measure and size properly rather than guessing from floor area alone.
Yes, for anything beyond the smallest units. Running one off a shared general power circuit is the most common reason a new air conditioner keeps tripping the board on hot days.
