Smoke Alarms

Photoelectric alarms, interconnected, so one going off wakes the whole house.

Placement and expiry

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms expire. Every one has a manufacture date stamped on the back, and after ten years the sensor is no longer reliable, regardless of whether it still chirps when you press the button.

In Victoria, homes built or significantly renovated since August 1997 need mains powered alarms with battery backup. We replace expired units, add alarms where there aren't enough, and interconnect them so that when one sounds they all do. That's what actually gets people out of a house at 3am.

We fit photoelectric alarms as standard. They respond faster to the slow smouldering fires that cause most home fire deaths, and they're far less prone to going off every time you make toast.

Good questions

Smoke alarm questions.

Take the alarm off its base. The manufacture date is printed on the back. If it's more than ten years old it needs replacing, even if it still beeps when you test it.

For new builds and significant renovations, yes. For existing homes it isn't mandatory, but it's the single biggest improvement you can make. An alarm sounding in the laundry doesn't wake anyone in a bedroom at the other end of the house.

Rental providers must have working alarms installed and tested annually, with records kept. We can handle the annual test and issue documentation you can file.
