Outdoor lighting fails for one reason more than any other: fittings and connections that were never rated for the exposure they actually get. Salt air down here is unforgiving, and a fitting that's fine under a covered alfresco will corrode in eighteen months on an exposed fence line.
We spec IP rated fittings to suit each position, run cable at proper depth in conduit, and use weatherproof connections rather than taping joints and hoping.
Zoning is where it gets good. Path and step lighting on a timer, garden feature lighting on its own switch, sensor driven security lighting at the entries. All of it dimmable and app controlled if you want it.

If it's specified properly, yes. We use marine grade or coastal rated fittings anywhere within reach of salt spray. It costs a little more up front and saves replacing everything in two years.
Yes. Timers, photocells that switch at dusk, or app control. Most people end up with path lighting on dusk to late, and feature lighting on a switch they use when they're outside.
For garden beds and path lighting it's often ideal, and easier to extend later. For floodlighting and alfresco areas mains voltage usually makes more sense. We mix the two where it suits.
